    Adventures of an Environmental Artist

    Wednesday 14th March, 8pm

Presentation for North Devon Arts at Broomhill Art and Sculpture Gardens

Peter Ward’s vocational career as an artist has celebrated the natural world in some form or another for the last 30 years and none more so than his time spent in North Devon. His work with locally gathered earth pigments and Bideford Black may be familiar to you but he has explored many other dimensions of the contemporary art world to aid communication about and participation in the wondrous world around us. This talk will look at some of the projects Peter has completed and explore ways that we as artists may better engage audiences with our work and the messages we are trying to convey.

North Devon Arts meet at Broomhill Art Hotel on the second Wednesday of each month for a buffet and an event. These are frequently talks from artists or others, but also include film shows, interactive poetry readings, formal conversations and social events. These well-established evenings are very popular and provide opportunities to meet like-minded people and to network among friends.

Meetings are free to members and £5 for non-members.

    22 June – 29 August 2017 Open Tuesday - Friday 10 am - 5 pm Saturday 11 am - 3 pm

Pairadaeza, the old Persian word for an enclosed space, lends its name to the notion of the Persian garden of paradise.

This garden related show brings together artists whose work reflects the garden as a place of solace, physical, psychological and spiritual healing and as an area to inspire the imagination:

For Pairadaeza Francesca has created an installation at White Moose entitled, The Dyers Kitchen, displaying the various equipment and elements required to create natural pigments from plants. Throughout the summer Francesca will also be cultivating a garden within the wildflower meadow at Broomhill Sculpture Park where she will be growing flowers and vegetables suitable for use in dyeing and for sustenance and where she will be available on certain days to chat with the public. (During September Francesca will be holding dyeing workshops on site at Broomhill. Dates tbc).

SOIL CULTURE: BRINGING THE ARTS DOWN TO EARTH - the publication

    Published January 2016

The Soil Culture project led by CCANW and RANE will be ending soon with its final exhibition at Peninsula Arts in Plymouth from 16th January to 19th March 2016[i]. The project as has been documented in a 120-page publication with essays by prominent soil scientists and soil artists, along with illustrated accounts of residencies and other activities enjoyed during the 3-years.

I was invited to join the Soil Culture project development team in 2011. My contribution has also involved workshops, exhibitions and some of the imagery used to promote and support it. I was recently asked to write a short essay for the publication and retake a series of photographs of ground and raw earth pigments to be used for the cover and chapter/section headings…

The publication is available from http://artdotearth.org/product/soil-culture-book/ at a price of £15 per copy.

    SOIL CULTURE: DEEP ROOTS 2

    16 January - 19 March 2016

    International Artists Celebrate Soils

The work of six important international artists is to be exhibited together for the first time in the South West. The exhibition Soil Culture: Deep Roots will feature works by Paolo Barrile, Mel Chin, herman de vries, Richard Long, Ana Mendieta and Claire Pentecost. It will be launched on 18 September and open to the public at Falmouth Art Gallery from 19 September - 21 November 2015, and at Peninsula Arts Gallery, Plymouth University 16 January - 19 March 2016.

This exhibition is a significant part of the UK contribution to the United Nations International Year of Soils (2015) and a final stage of the three-year Soil Culture project initiated by the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World (CCANW) and launched at Falmouth University in 2013.

Healthy soils are essential for the production of food, fibres and timber, they filter our water and protect us from flooding and are a vital part of our global ecosystem. Today, however, soils areincreasingly being threatened by poor management and short-termism, resulting in compaction, contamination and a loss of natural fertility. In the South West alone, 38% of its soils have already been significantly degraded.

The unique range of artworks on display includes previously unseen work by Mel Chin, who uses plants to extract heavy metals from contaminated land to that of Claire Pentecost who has refashioned soil into the shapes of gold ingots to reflect its true worth. There will also be works by seven British artists; Chris Drury, Andy Goldsworthy, Sandra Masterson, Daro Montag, David Nash, Peter Ward and Adam White. These will be linked to interactive displays and activities which explore the science behind soils.

The Soil Culture programme has been supported by Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund, British Society of Soil Science, the participating galleries and organisations and through sponsorship. Soil Culture: Deep Roots can be seen at Falmouth Art Gallery from 19 September - 21 November 2015, and at Peninsula Arts Gallery, Plymouth University 16 January - 19 March 2016.

    eARTh has MOVED...

    Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November, 1100-1600

    MIDWINTER OPEN STUDIO

After an exciting first year, including a great exhibition at the White Moose Gallery, a number of successful workshops and OPEN STUDIOS and participation in other international projects, eARTh has relocated to a smaller, more rural space at Hele Corn Mill where we will be continuing our work with local earth pigments and plant dyes.

Hele Corn Mill dates from 1525 and is a unique working watermill in North Devon. Located just 300m from stunning Hele Bay beach just east of Ilfracombe, a visit to the mill makes a perfect family visit. Opposite the mill is the Miller's Wife Tearoom, where you can relax and enjoy a traditional cream tea or a slice of one of many delicious cakes, which are homemade every day. For directions, parking and opening times please visit www.helecornmill.com.

You are warmly invited to a pre-Christmas opening – a chat, some nibbles, a glass of wine and some art. If you cannot make the opening please feel free to visit anytime. eARTh will be open on a regular basis along with workshops, exhibitions and events throughout the year and is looking forward to seeing you soon.

    Geumgang Nature Art Pre-biennale 2015

    7th October - 30 November 2015

    BREATHING ART - SOUTH KOREA

The Geumgang Nature Art Biennale is an international Nature Art exhibition planned by Yatoo, the Korean Nature Art Association firstly established in 1981. Yatoo spreads Nature Art around Gongju in Chungnam Province. Based on Yatoo’s experience of planning and hosting international nature art events since the early 1990s, the first Biennale was held in 2004, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the South Chungcheong Province and Gongju City. Throughout three weeks the artists from around the world live together and create their works. An introductive session for the nature art project and other programs are conducted in parallel. There are two programs for foreign artists and IWO campers. The first is introducing the Korean culture, the second is a project created together with children and other citizens. The works of the artists are displayed at Ssangshin Park allowing the visitors to observe how they interact with the natural context.

pete was invited to contribute photographic documentation of a number of works and a project proposal to this international environmental art residency programme and exhibition organised by YATOO-I  in south korea. the proposal will hopefully lead to a 3-week fully paid residency in korea in 2016.

    Soil Culture: Deep Roots

    19th September - 21st November 2015

    International Artists Celebrate Soils

The work of six important international artists is to be exhibited together for the first time in the South West. The exhibition Soil Culture: Deep Roots will feature works by Paolo Barrile, Mel Chin, herman de vries, Richard Long, Ana Mendieta and Claire Pentecost. In the South West alone, 38% of its soils have already been significantly degraded.

    flax, beeswax and egg yolks

    11th – 25th march 2015

an exploration into non-plastic painting mediums

with Victoria (BC) based artist Clare Thomas (www.clarethomasartist.wordpress.com)

residency, workshop and artist’s talk @ eARTh

Clare will be with us for a fortnight exploring non-plastic binding mediums. Having completed an MA Art & Environment in Falmouth researching plastic pollution in the oceans in 2012, Clare returned to Canada where her practice turned to painting. During her stay Clare will be working with local earth pigments along with natural binders such as egg yolk, gum Arabic, walnut and linseed oil, glycerin, honey and beeswax. Working both in the studio and outside, Clare will create original drawings and paintings inspired by both the materials, the North Devon landscape and her own ongoing personal research into memory loss and open the studio up for others to try their hand at working with natural paints.

“Acrylic paints and binders are ubiquitous in modern art practice – even oil painters typically use acrylic gesso on their canvas. Similarly, very few artists know how to make their own paint, even though before the modern age all artists did so. Although I can buy oil paint, watercolour and gouache that are acrylic-free, a sense of curiosity (and bloody-mindedness!) compels me to experiment with making my own plastic-free, naturally sourced paints…”

If you would be interested in attending a day workshop or hearing about Clare’s residency and ongoing practice and research please contact us @ eARTh. Spaces for the workshop will be limited so please book early.

    Workshop - Saturday 21st March 1100 – 1600, £50 per person including materials

Artist’s Talk and Residency Exhibition - Wednesday 25th March, 7 – 9pm, £5 per person inc. light refreshments
